« The idea behind this conference, that of the role of memory in demography and demographic research, was a brilliant stimulus to thought and it was fantastic the way the different participants took the theme to heart and interpreted it in different ways. The combinations of archivists talking about finding and rescuing historial demographic data in Africa, the use different researchers made of historical archives in interpreting contemporary demographic outcomes and the links made between documented past, past experience or discrimination and the diverse impacts of historical population experience, cultural influences and individual biographies on so many dimensions of demography were fascinating and very creative. This book is an excellent output for all this creativity. »
